Seeing stars

Seeing stars

Six Org de Rac wines are listed with four or four-and-a-half star ratings in the 2018 edition of Platter’s South African Wine Guidewhich was released this month.

The stars denote wines that are outstanding (4½ stars) and excellent (4 stars).

This is the brightest constellation of stars that Org de Rac wines has ever received fromPlatter’s, which is still regarded as the “Bible” of South African wines. It’s been published annually for over 30 years and today lists and rates wines from around 600 South African wineries. The guide helps wine novices and experts alike to learn about and choose between the great wines of the Cape.

When it comes to the judging process for Platter’s, South Africa’s leading journalists, critics, sommeliers and specialist retailers are called in to assess the entries. Palates are discerning and the judging criteria stringent.

Here’s what the 2018 edition of Platter’s says about Org de Rac:

“Once a Swartland grain farm, Org de Rac over 17 years has grown into a significant producer of organic wine (and husk spirit), showing year-on-year quality improvements − no doubt to be abetted by, among others, a new grape sorting system. Recent, too, are an in-house marketing and sales manager, local/overseas agents and in-gestation sauvignon made with Constantia’s certified-organic Silvermist. Cooler conditions and advanced technologies have resulted in substantial −and crucial −water savings.”

These are Org de Rac’s brightest shining stars:

  • Org de Rac Reserve Cabernet 2013 − 4½ stars – Outstanding
  • Org de Rac Die Waghuis Red 2016 − 4½ stars – Outstanding
  • Org de Rac Die Waghuis White 2016 – 4 stars – Excellent
  • Org de Rac Reserve Shiraz 2015 – 4 stars – Excellent
  • Org de Rac Reserve Chardonnay 2015 – 4 stars – Excellent
  • Org de Rac Cuvee La Vern Methode Cap Classique 2014 – 4 stars – Excellent

We'll always have Paris

“We just walked around Paris, stopping off at every second bar for a glass of house red or white, the wine a lubricant for conversation and a companion to the hearty, simple country dishes Frank enjoyed ordering…”

On his website “Wine Goggle”, well-known wine writer, Emile Joubert, blogs about his 32-year friendship with Org de Rac’s winemaker and predicts great things to come from the Org de Rac estate.

Looking towards Harvest 2018

That the Cape finds itself in the midst of one of the harshest droughts in living memory, is by now familiar news to anyone with an interest in this beautiful part of the world. But the vine-plant is an amazing thing and to the eye the vines of Org de Rac are lush, emerald green and healthy. At the moment light drip-irrigation is being given, ensuring the soils remain cool and slightly moist, and already bunches of tight green berries can be seen.

With our organic farming methods leading to healthy growing conditions, the vines are set to produce grapes of outstanding quality for the 2018 harvest and consequently Org de Rac is expecting another great year.

Upcoming events

Oranges and lemons

Over the past two months, Org de Rac has transformed the lower slopes of the farm, adjacent to the N7, into a citrus orchard. So far, 12 hectares of soft-skinned citrus trees have been planted, and an additional six hectares will be planted next winter.

Org de Rac estate manager, Hendry Bredenkamp, explains that once the planting is complete, three different varieties of citrus tree will grow in the orchard. Each variety will ripen at a different time of the year − between April and August − which means steady work and more income for Org de Rac’s workers.

The trees will bear fruit in three or four year’s time and a full harvest is expected in seven years. The Goedehoop Citrus Company in nearby Citrusdal will package and market Org de Rac’s citrus fruit.
